Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) can be utilized in identification of minerals, morphology and mode of occurrence within the pore system of a reservoir at a magnification of over 10,000x.  It is commonly used to characterize occurrence of clay minerals and characterize micro-pores in unconventional reservoir zones.  Image analyses software is used to identify effective versus non-effective porosity from back-scattered SEM.  It can also be used in conjunction with mercury injection capillary pressure analyses for determining pore throat size distribution.

SEM images either commissioned or provided by the client are interpreted in-house, and all available data and analyses are incorporated and integrated for local and/or regional sedimentological studies.
